Google has confirmed the next edition of Android at that site will be called Marshmallow. The forthcoming version of the mobile platform, initially codenamed M, was first seen at the company’s I/O event back in May.
In an announcement on the Android Developers site, Google told devs to start getting their apps ready for the final release of the platform.
A new software development kit and almost-complete preview of the new system has been released, suggesting a street date could come far sooner than many expected. Usually Google releases new versions of its mobile platform late in the year.
However, after major issues surrounding the Android Stagefright malware bug, it appears the search giant may release its updated OS to Nexus phones soon in order to fix the bug once and for all.
It’s unlikely, though, that Marshmallow will be rolled out to non–Nexus devices quickly.
Samsung, HTC and LG are likely to take their time bringing the software to their phones and tablets, meaning the Android operating system will remain fragmented for the time being.
Android Marshmallow features a series of new tools, including the ability to eke out more battery life and improved app permissions to stop add–ons accessing aspects of your phone you don’t want it to.
The Android Pay mobile payments system and an updated take on the Google Now digital assistant are also key to the new platform.
