Wrestling is fake

I’d say no, just because not everyone “gets” the funny Southern expressions/analogies that Cornette uses regularly. Everyone does him, but only few people do him well, unlike Steiner, which anyone can nail.

Cornette’s magician analogy doesn’t quite hold up for me. He’s right that most of us don’t know how magicians do their best tricks, but we do know that it’s fake and that he hasn’t actually made the Statue of Liberty disappear. Likewise I’ll bet most of us don’t know how to safely give someone a back breaker either, but we do know that he hasn’t actually attempted to break his opponents back.

That said, when I see clips like this I can’t help but wonder if Cornette’s wider point might just have some merit.

To counter the play thing, I’ve been to Shakespeare Globe in London and actors there literally will break character when they either address the audience or if a technical mishap happens. In one show I’ve seen an actor point out an audience member on their phone and then peek his head out from under the stage because the trap door he was supposed to come out from wouldn’t open.

Of course, Shakespeare Globe is kind of like the PWG of theatre, oddly enough. Plus, the comedic/clown characters break the fourth wall primarily, not like the primary dramatic characters or characters in tragedies like Othello or Hamlet

Yeah, it isn’t a black and white thing. On one hand spots like this are pretty funny and might even help get more eyes on the product. On the other hand it could be a slippery slope to the product getting watered down. I think it fine to have a few spots like this here and there.

His argument is that wrestling makes more money if people believe that what they are seeing is real, wrestlers actually hate each other and such. Which is an old mentality but not necessarily false, people paid to see Ospreay vs Vader in 2016.

Well it only has happened in Chuck Taylor matches, but idk if he ever did this in CHiKARA. I know he’s done a lot of amazing comedy spots there but I can’t think off the top of my head if he’s done slow mo there.
